Bell Christopher Bell

has worked at Gunn High School since 2007. At Gunn, Chris first worked in both the Opportunities and Focus On Success programs. He has received degrees from the University of California at Davis and earned his teaching credential from Notre Dame de Namur University. One thing that Chris loves about working at Gunn is attending student performances on campus and seeing how talented Gunn students are in a wide range of activities.

CongressRachel Congress

has worked at Gunn for over seven years. She has a Bachelor degree in Psychology with a Minor in Studio Art from Scripps College. She worked at Gunn as a Special Education Aide for three years before taking a leave to obtain her teaching credential in Mathematics at Notre Dame de Namur University. To her delight, Rachel was able to return to Gunn as a classroom teacher. She has been a facilitator at Camp Everytown for five sessions and is one of the leaders of the Staff Wellness professional development group. In her spare time Rachel is a passionate skier and enjoys reading, swimming, playing the piano, and creating works of art.


Deggeller Dave Deggeller

has been teaching Mathematics at Gunn since 1996.  He is a graduate of Palo Alto High School (1989) and Rice University where he earned his Bachelor’s in Economics (1993) and his Master’s in Math Education (1995).  In 2009, Dave was Nationally Board certified in secondary mathematics.  He has taught all levels of math at Gunn from Algebra 1 to BC Calculus and was awarded the Principal’s Cup in honor of his commitment to student learning and his many contributions as a faculty member at Gunn High School.  In his spare time you might find him playing with his two children, hamming it up in the student staff musical, or composing offbeat songs on guitar and piano.

Rachel Dion

first began teaching at Gunn in 1999 and taught here for 6 years.  After staying home with her children for a few years Rachel is excited to return to Gunn to teach one class.  Prior to Gunn, she also taught math and chemistry for six years in Canada.  Rachel earned her math degree from Trent University and Education degree from Queen’s University in Canada.  In her free time Rachel loves to hike and spend time with family and friends.


Florea Christina Florea

began teaching at Gunn in 2006 after several years at Saratoga High School. At Santa Clara Univeristy she earned a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics and Marketing, a Master’s Degree in Education, and completed course work for her teaching credential. In her free time, Cristina enjoys ballroom dancing and spending time with family and friends.

Gleason Diane Gleason

received her teaching credential from San Jose State University. She is credentialed in both mathematics and business. Before teaching at Gunn, she taught at Gunderson High School in San Jose. As a Cubberly graduate, she was happy to be return to Palo Alto and the PAUSD.  In 2009, Diane received her National Board Certification in secondary mathematics. Outside of the classroom, Diane likes to backpack, ski, and horseback ride.


GrunskyRachel Grunsky

has been teaching math since 2004. She earned her degree in Math from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and her Masters in Education from National University. Rachel is a ballroom dancer. You will always see her participating in dance related events at Gunn High School.


Hahn Danny Hahn

grew up in southern California and studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating in 2003, he got a job teaching math and fell in love with the profession. In 2006 he returned to Penn. where he earned a Master's degree in education. Danny received a Knowles Science Teaching Foundation fellowship in 2006 and an Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education fellowship in 2010. He is a huge fan of the annual Choir/Staff musical.

HawesKathy Hawes

has been a teacher at Gunn High School for almost 15 years.  Previously she taught 8th grade math and algebra at Graham Middle School.  She has an Electrical Engineering degree from UC San Diego, a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Santa Clara University and completed the teacher credentialing program at San Jose State.  Kathy is Nationally Board Certified in Secondary Mathematics and has published 2 articles in the Mathematics Teacher.  She is currently the Instructional Supervisor of the mathematics department.  Kathy is passionate about helping students of all ability levels succeed at learning mathematics and reach their full potential.

HerreshoffPeter Herreshoff

has been a high school teacher for over 20 years, most of them at Gunn. Previously he taught at Marshall High School in Los Angeles and at the Universidad de las Americas in Puebla, Mexico. Peter holds a bachelors degree in Atmospheric Sciences from UCLA and completed both a bachelor degree in music and a masters in education at Cal State Northridge. He has been a two-time recipient of Edith Mae Slyffe award (2005 and 2006) from the Mathematics Association of America, and was the 1st place winner of the Bay Area Math Olympiad teachers competition in 2010 and in 2011. As advisor to the Gunn Math Circle, he is often busy organizing math contests. Peter enjoys learning mathematics together with Gunn’s wonderful students, whose curiosity and dedication make teaching at Gunn a wonderful experience.

KarasChris Karas

For over 30 years, Chris Karas has taught high school math of all levels from Pre-Algebra to BC Calculus. He also taught calculus and pre-calculus for UC, Berkeley Extension Program for several years. Chris has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from the UC Berkeley and received a Secondary Teaching Credential and a Master’s Degree in Education from San Francisco State University. He enjoys participating in the staff-student airbands, the staff-student musical, the Clash of the Titans, and the staff softball game. In his spare time Chris enjoys playing softball, basketball, soccer, and jogging. He has completed several full and half marathons.


LombardAmelia Lombard

As a graduate of Palo Alto schools, Amelia knows how exceptional PAUSD is. After graduating from Paly, she earned her B.S. in mathematics from Duke University, and her M.A. in education from Claremont Graduate University. She taught for two years in Los Angeles Unified schools before returning to Palo Alto, now as a math teacher. In the classroom, Amelia encourages student participation and enjoys involving students in dynamic activities, like building three-dimensional stellated dodecahedrons (in geometry A) or analyzing the population.

PaleyJosh Paley

is a Computer Science and Mathematics teacher who believes that a year of Computer Science should be a graduation requirement for all high school students. He is a member of the CSTA Leadership Cohort, a national group of teachers who effect change and promote CS education. Josh received the NCWIT Aspirations Award for Educators for his work in encouraging young women to do computing. He is excited to partner with UC-Berkeley on http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs10/ as well as Google's CAPE program. Josh won a national fantasy baseball contest in Y2K and occasionally writes articles on baseball, for example Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster 2011. Josh is an avid indoorsman as he is allergic to things such as plants, dirt, and probably fresh air. He enjoys board games and poker and is a ferocious Boggle player.

RedfieldChris Redfield

has been teaching math at Gunn for 10 years. Before becoming a math teacher Chris worked in technology and consumer products, with Silicon Graphics, Macromedia, and Dole Food Company. One of his goals as a teacher is to make high school math more relevant to students by making connections to real-world applications. Chris earned a BSE from Princeton University and a MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to being a math teacher, Chris has been coach of the golf team for 10 years and coached boys basketball for his first 9 years at Gunn.

RenazcoDaisy Renazco

With more than 13 years of teaching experience, Daisy Renazco loves her chosen profession. As a teacher, she has the opportunity to have conversations with students that can lead to a change in how students accept one another. She is the teacher advisor for the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), and has received awards from Gunn High School and Project Outlet on her leadership in creating a safe school for all students through our Not In Our Schools week. Daisy earned her degrees from Saint Mary’s College of California and San Jose State University. In her free time she enjoys anything that lets her to be outside, spending time with friends and family.

TantodGopi Tantod

has been a teacher for 8 years at both the high school and junior college level. She has taught all different levels, including Algebra 1 and Calculus. Gopi completed her undergraduate and graduate work at UCLA where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and a Master’s degree in both Education and Applied Mathematics. In her free time she likes reading a good book, playing tennis, or just spending some time with family and friends.

VirmaniRajeev Virmani

began teaching in 2002 as a Geometry Teacher at St. Francis High School in Sacramento. After teaching for two years, Rajeev entered the Credential/Master’s Program at UC Davis. His master’s thesis examined the effect of math journaling on student learning. Currently, Rajeev enjoys teaching AP Statistics and Trigonometry/ Analytical Geometry to a diverse group of learners. Along with teaching full-time, Rajeev is also pursuing his Doctorate in Education from the University of San Francisco. As a doctoral student, Rajeev continues to find new ways to integrate theoretical concepts into daily instruction.

WebeStephanie Werbe

grew up in southern California and received a B.S. degree in Mathematics Education from California State University Long Beach. After college, she moved to the bay area and received her mathematics credential from Notre Dame de Namur University. She enjoys helping her students understand the fundamental reasoning behind mathematics, as well as getting to know them outside of the classroom. One of the highlights of her Stephanie’s year is participating in the staff airbands performance during Homecoming week.
