Counseling Update - December 1, 2014

Counseling

Dear Gunn Community,

Here is this week's message from the Gunn Counseling Department.

Titan 101 This Thursday  (9th Grade)
This Thursday (December 5) at 2:37 PM, we will be having a Titan 101 session for all freshmen.
The session will be about "Diversity and Acceptance" and encourages our students to reflect on the impact their words and actions have on others around them.

Finals (All Grades)
The week after next we'll be having our finals. This is a reminder for all students to take advantage of tutorial and check in with their teachers tomorrow (Tuesday) and next Tuesday to receive additional support in their studies.

Hours for Library (All Grades)
A reminder that our library is a great place to study and is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday-Thursday and 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM on Friday.

Caps and Gowns (12th Grade)
Seniors' Cap and Gown forms for graduation are here! Please come by the Student Activities Center and pick up a form and then turn in your completed order form plus payments to the Jostens Representatives at lunch on the quad, either Thursday (December 4) or Friday (December 5). The order form will also have details on ordering online.

Second Semester Schedules (All Grades)
All second semester schedules for students will be available online on December 17 at 8:00 PM.

Support (All Grades)
I personally want to thank everyone for all the support you have given our staff the past few weeks. It has been greatly appreciated by everyone.
The loss of youth to suicide is an issue that is larger than just a school or even a community but as a community we can come together to work together to take care of our youth and take care of each other.
Our community has responded with the city setting up track watch and our district in providing additional counseling support at Gunn to help our students and staff on an ongoing basis. Our teachers have made accommodations for students in an effort to ensure that they have the time needed to complete their work.

To help support you in a time of crisis, here are some important phone numbers to contact.

  • Santa Clara County Hotline (855) 278-4204
  • California Youth Crisis Hotline (800) 843-5200
  • Suicide Hotline (800) 273-TALK

If you have concerns your child may have severe social emotional health needs, please email me at tjacoubowsky@pausd.org.
I also ask that if you feel your child or another child is in severe danger of causing harm to themselves, please call 911 immediately.

ACS Counseling Available on Saturday (All Grades)
Adolescent Counseling Services now has the ability to see students on Saturdays.
There are now clinicians ready and available to do assessments at their outpatient clinic at 1717 Embarcadero Road Suite 4000 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Parents and students need to contact Connie Mayer, the program director, at (925) 640-2422 to schedule an appointment.
Services will be offered for free for Gunn students at this time of crisis intervention.
Please note that this is not a drop in clinic and that an appointment is needed before a student can be seen.

Freshmen 1:1 Meetings (9th Grade)
This week, the Gunn Counselors are beginning their one-on-one meeting with freshmen. During the meeting, the counselors will talk about high school transition, their currents courses and the student's interests in and out of schools.
The counselors will also discuss a four year plan with the freshmen that will be followed up in the Titan 101 counselor session in January.

Sophomores and Naviance (10th Grade)
This week, Leighton Lang will finish visiting sophomore classes to introduce our Naviance program to the students.
Naviance is a powerful software tool that allows students to explore college and career options and will be a valuable resource for them to use in the years to come.

College Visits  (11th and 12th Grades)
We are in full swing of colleges visits. Please check your Naviance account for information about some great colleges who send representatives to discuss unique academic packages for Gunn students.
To insure a spot at one of the sessions, students will need to sign up at least 24 hours in advance through Naviance and prearrange with teachers to miss class.
