Counseling Update - May 04th , 2015

Counseling

 Dear Gunn Community,

Here is this week's update from the Gunn Counseling Department.

AP Agreement for Students Taking Three or More APs in 2015-2016 (Current 10th and 11th Grades)

For all students who are taking three or more Advanced Placement (AP) classes, we're having students and their parents sign off on a AP Agreement form to show they recognize the time commitment that is required for the academic load they have signed up for 2015-2016.

Last week, the counseling department mailed home a copy of all AP Agreement forms. Thank you to everyone who has turned in their AP Agreement form. If you have not done so already, please bring in your form no later than this Friday, May 8.

We also have forms available in the counseling office if you need a new one.

AP Testing Began Today (11th and 12 Grade)

Starting today, May 4, Advance Placement (AP) testing will take place at Gunn High School. AP testing will run through May 15.

Community College Event-Wed, May 6, 7:30-9 PM Gunn Library (11th and 12 Grades)

Have you underrated community college as a viable option? Come to the Gunn Library, this Wednesday, May 6 at 7:30 PM to learn more about the great opportunities available at Foothill Community College.

At the event, you will learn about Honors College, challenging curricula, international diversity, and quality instruction are a few of the similarities that exist between Foothill College and 4-yr universities. Students need to understand the benefits a community college path offers, and we welcome you to this College & Career Center/Gunn PTSA sponsored event on why community college really should be on your list.

As the cost of university degrees climb and admission competition escalates, attending college at one of our excellent local community colleges offers many benefits as you fulfill your general ed requirements or focus on a certificated program and employment. Join us for an overview of the resources, programs, education quality, and current transfer data.

Our panel will include Foothill professors Simon Pennington (Art History), Brian Evans (Economics) and Lauren Velasco (Communications), and recent Gunn graduates whose academic paths have included Foothill or DeAnza Community colleges. This event is tailored to Gunn and Paly junior and senior students and their parents, but all are welcome.

Summer School Outside of PAUSD (9th, 10th and 11th Grades)

If a student is signing up for a summer class outside of the Palo Alto Unified School District, the student must get that class pre approved by their counselor. Only classes that are pre approved will be eligible to receive credit on a Gunn transcript.

Zero Period and G Period Prep (All Grades)

For next school year, Gunn will only be offering zero period for PE and the morning broadcast class. Many students took a zero period class this year to have a G prep so it wouldn't impact athletics and other afternoon activities.

Next year, the first priority for G prep goes to Gunn athletes who participate in sports that have afternoon games. All other requests will be reviewed by the counseling department.
