Counseling Update - May 18th, 2015

Counseling

Dear Gunn Community,

Here is this week's update from the Gunn Counseling Department.

No School for Students on June 1-Professional Development Day for Teachers (All Grades)

On June 1, the day before finals, there will be no school for Gunn students as all teachers will be involved in professional development to help them prepare for the new bell schedule we will have for the 2015-2016 school year pending board approval at the board meeting on May 26.

While we know this is a late change to our schedule, the Gunn Administration and Gunn Instructional Council felt this will be a valuable day for our staff to spend time preparing for teaching in the new bell schedule for next year.

In the week before finals, there will only be new content on the first day classes meet. Also, since E period meets an extra time that week, we will have an extra E period tutorial on Friday, May 29.

On June 1, we will have the library and academic center open for students if they would like to come on campus.

2015-2016 Course Verification Forms in English Classes on Thursday and Friday (Current 9th, 10th and 11th Grades)

This Thursday and Friday, all returning students will receive their course verification form for classes for 2015-2016.

If you turned in the original form in March, you do not need to return this form unless there is a mistake on your course list.

Here are the possible mistakes:

1.  I'm missing a graduation requirement.
2.  I don't have an English class.
3.  I don't have a history class.
4.  I'm in the wrong level of a class (any changes must be approved by the Instructional Supervisor (IS) and Mr. Jacoubowsky).

These are not mistakes:

1.  I want to change my elective.
2.  I want to change my level of class without IS or Mr. Jacoubowsky approval.

Zero Period and G Period Prep (All Grades)

For next school year, Gunn will only be offering zero period for PE and the morning broadcast class. Many students took a zero period class this year to have a G prep so it wouldn't impact athletics and other afternoon activities.

Next year, the first priority for G prep goes to Gunn athletes who participate in sports that have afternoon games. All other requests will be reviewed by the counseling department.

Counseling Survey (All Grades)

Beginning this Wednesday, Gunn students will participate in a survey on Gunn counseling services.

The results will be used to gauge the effectiveness of the services we offer and how best to direct future counseling services.

Community Service (9th, 10th and 11th Grades)

There are now yellow Community Service Tracking Forms available in the counseling office.

All community service hours must be documented on the yellow form if you want those hours recorded on your transcript.

If you have already started tracking your hours on another system, you need to record those hours on the official yellow sheet.

See the Registrar or Mr. Jacoubowsky if you have any questions.

Summer School Outside of PAUSD (9th, 10th and 11th Grades)

If a student is signing up for a summer class outside of the Palo Alto Unified School District, the student must get that class pre approved by their counselor. Only classes that are pre approved will be eligible to receive credit on a Gunn transcript.

Bridge Classes (Current 9th, 10th and 11th Grades)

Over the summer many students desire to take a "bridge" class so they can move up a level. This has been very common in math and sometimes world language. If a student wishes to enroll in a "bridge" class, they must first get the approval of the instructional supervisor of that department.

It is important to know that students moving up a level by using a "bridge" class may encounter a difficult academic environment the following year. A six to eight week summer class with intense instruction doesn't always translate to the same level of academic development that one has when they take the course for an entire year. Please consult with the instructional supervisor so you may plan accordingly if you choose this path.

Work Experience Opportunity this Summer (Current 9th, 10th and 11th Grades)

Work Experience and Exploratory Experience are being offered this summer from June 8 to June 11 from 8:00-12:00 noon at Gunn High School.  This is being offered “prior” to the start of summer school, therefore rising 10-12 graders may enroll and still attend summer school.  Unit Shy seniors may also enroll in the class.  Attendance is MANDATORY (no absences can occur) and students may earn up to 5 credits.  Students must have a job or internship prior to start of the class.

Spots are limited and signups will be begin at noon on May 12 by clicking the link below.

Important Information for Seniors (12th Grade)

Senioritis

We are entering the two weeks of school for the seniors and so far cases of "Senioritis" have been kept to a minimum. We are on the watch for Senioritis as it can be very contagious and can dramatically impact post secondary options for students. Every year we have some students who have their college admission rescinded because of a drop in grades in the final semester. Make sure to keep your grades up through the end of the year.

Final Transcript through Parchment

If you are planning to attend a four year college, don’t forget that you need to use Parchment (www.parchment.com) to have your Final Transcript sent to your college of choice. Instructions about the Final Transcript Request process can be found on a yellow handout in the SAC, and also in the Registrar’s office in Guidance. Please note that the Registrar will only send your Final Transcript to ONE COLLEGE, unless you are in a Wait List situation. If you are in a Wait List situation, you must stop by the Registrar’s office and show her your Wait List letter. Please see the Registrar if you have questions!

Naviance Surveys

The Senior Survey is now available for students to take online through their Naviance account. The senior survey is an important tool for the school as it gives the students an opportunity to give feedback on their experiences at Gunn High School. The survey must be completed before seniors get their cap and gowns.

Caps and Gowns May 19

After completing the Senior Survey on Naviance, students will be eligible to receive their caps and gowns which will be distributed  at lunch on May 19.
