Counseling Update - November 3, 2014

Counseling

Dear Gunn Community,

Here is this week's update from the Gunn Counseling Department.

Health (All Grades)
We're now over two months into the school year and similar to past school years at this time, we're noticing an uptick in student absences related to health. If your child is ill, please have them stay home so they can recover and reduce the spread of colds to others. It's much better to err on the side of caution and have your child be healthy than to attend school while under the weather and have the cold be prolonged.

Upcoming Dates

  • Veteran's Day on November 11 (All Grades)
With the Veteran's Day Holiday on November 11, all Gunn students will have the day off. There will be school on Monday, November 10.
  •  D Period Assembly and F Period Tutorial on November 13 (All Grades)
With the Veteran's Day Holiday, we will have an extra D period and F period for the week. On November 13, we will have special events to take advantage of the extra periods.
On D period on that day, we will have Titan 101 for freshmen, an extra tutorial for sophomores and an assembly for juniors and seniors on college financing presented by the College and Career Center.
During F period, we will have tutorial for all students to make up for the tutorial that will be missed due to Veteran's Day.
  • Final Day to Drop a Class-November 14 (All Grades)
The final day to drop a class and not have it appear on the transcript is November 14. If a student is going to drop a class, the student must consult with the teacher and the instructional supervisor of that department.
  • Second Quarter Progress Reports November 14 (All Grades)
The second quarter progress report period will end on November 14. All students who are in danger of failing a class will be officially notified. Second quarter progress reports will be available online on November 19 and will be mailed home shortly thereafter.

Senior Conferences (12th Grade)
The Gunn Counselors are finishing up their senior conferences. In the sessions, the counselors will check in with the students, go over the college application process and also let them know about the services that are available in our expanded College and Career Center.

College Visits  (11th and 12th Grades)
We are in full swing having colleges visit. Please check your Naviance account. There are some great colleges coming and many have unique academic packages that are great for Gunn students.
To be able to attend one of the sessions, students will need to sign up at least 24 hours in advance through Naviance and prearrange with teachers to miss class.

Naviance Account (11th and 12th Grades)
While we're talking about Naviance, please check to make sure your Naviance account is up to date. If you're not receiving messages from Naviance, it's possible that the messages may have been inappropriately filed in the "junk" folder on your email. Be sure to add Naviance to your email's approved "whitelist."

Special Announcement for Students Applying to Georgetown or MIT (12th Grade)
All seniors who are applying to Georgetown University or MIT, must complete the paper copy of the Secondary School Report and Midyear Report forms. Gunn counselors will not be submitting these forms electronically.
Your Counselor or Registrar can supply you with a paper copy of the forms so you can complete your portion before you include them in your college packet.
