Athletes looking to suit up for the Titans need to show up to practice with a completed athletic packet and a check made out to Gunn Sports Boosters for $150. Football is a no-cut sport with practices every day from 3:30 to 6 p.m. with games either on Friday evening or Saturday afternoon. Last year’s squad went 2-8, but with new coach Bob Sykes leading the team this year, they are looking forward to a big season, winning league and going to the Central Coast Section (CCS) championships.
Cross Country
Athletes interested in the cross country team should report to practice at 3:30 p.m. after school, outside the fitness center near the track with their athletic packets. Practices are Monday through Friday, and most meets are on Saturday. Cross country is a no-cut sport, so all committed runners will be on the team.
Girls' Volleyball
Varsity tryouts are over, but junior varsity (JV) and freshmen tryouts started Aug. 24 and will continue until this Friday. Completed athletic packets must be turned in prior to tryouts. Practices start everyday after school at 3:30 p.m. Players must attend all sessions unless given permission otherwise by Head Coach Kevin Hwang. Hwang’s main goal for the team this year is to establish the proper culture and environment for the players to learn and maximize their potential, both from as individual players and as a team perspective. According to Hwang, this year’s team will be exciting to watch and to be part of.
Girls' Tennis
Girls interested in playing tennis should report to the tennis courts behind the gym after school with their athletic packets in hand. Practices are 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Meets are mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays. Last season, the tennis squad finished third in the De Anza Division and 16th in the state tournament. This season, they will compete in the El Camino Division and hope to finish strongly and move back up to the De Anza Division.
Girls' Water Polo
Girls’ water polo has been having tryouts everyday for the past couple weeks at 6 p.m. In order to tryout, simply bring a swimsuit and willingness to learn to the Gunn Pool. Contact Head Coach Mark Hernandez at mhernandez@pausd.org or come to one of the practices. The team is goofy and extremely hardworking, but “they are very fast, athletic, and deep, hands down,” Coach Hernandez said. Their goal this year is to make CCS for the second year in a row, win league and hopefully a couple games at CCS, if not the entire title. The past year they finished the season fifth in league.
Boys' Water Polo
Boys’ water polo practices and tryouts began on Monday, Aug. 17. In order to try out, go as soon as possible to one of the practices. Practices are currently being worked out. Bring a suit, goggles, and other articles of clothing one would need in order to exercise. The current players have been working hard and hoping to win lots of games this season. “Go to hell week or else,” junior Yi Zhou said. In order to receive more information about practices, contact Assistant Coach Scott Foster at sfoster@naibt.com.
