More than one side to every story
I am writing in response to the article in the Forum section of the Dec. 14, 2005 edition of The Oracle written by Alex Lee. I was disappointed that Alex did not seek input from me regarding his article, since he openly criticizes the Gunn Administration. Let me correct some of the factual errors in his article.
The Gunn Administration did not close the movie program. Joelle Champney, who ran the program, chose to close it. In a letter to the District dated Nov. 16, 2005, she wrote: “Now I am stopping this movie program because it became obvious that the program was not welcome on the grounds of Gunn High School.”
Focus Cinema was invited to meet with school and District staff to consider ways to keep the movie program going, but Ms. Champney declined the offer to meet.
Focus Cinema is not a non-profit organization. It has never been registered as such.
As of Nov. 2005, no profits from the movie program have been recorded as being paid to Spangenberg.Theatre. I am not sure where Alex obtained his figures, but they do not fit with what Champney herself indicates.
There are always (at least) two sides to every story. It is a pity that Alex chose to hear only one of them before writing his article.
