Newsbrief: Gunn receives new computers
Published on February 11, 2008 in Volume 44, Issue 5

Gunn recently purchased 132 new computers for student and teacher use, which are being distributed throughout the campus.

The Instructional Council purchased the new computers using funding from several sources. “The money used to purchase the computers was provided by this year’s district bridge funding [money provided by the school district for technology], some state money we saved from last year, and PTSA Direct Appeal donation money,” Principal Noreen Likins said.

A new computer lab will be installed in P-20 for the world languages department’s use. Math and science classes will have access to two 16-laptop mobile labs and mini-labs will be installed in Film Literature, social studies and special education classrooms. “Teachers will make use of the additional computer lab, mini-labs, and mobile labs to integrate more technology based lessons and student projects into their classes,” Technology Coordinator Lettie Weinmann said.

The remaining computers will be installed in the Student Activities Center, the Academic Center, the College and Career Center, and the math-science, English and social studies offices.

The computers will help improve the quality of education at Gunn overall, Weinmann said. “This will give students access to the wealth of resources on the internet right in the classroom,” she said. “We find that new teachers especially are more enthusiastic about using technology in their teaching when given the right tools to use.”
