As the first school to be classified as a Green Business in Santa Clara, Gunn is taking the right step in the direction of a cleaner, healthier campus for all students and faculty members. With new recycle bins on the way and a new compost system in development, Gunn is moving in the direction of a green environment.
Being a Green Business means not only that the campus will become cleaner, but that more materials will be recycled and composted. With the new permanent recycling bins around campus, students will be further encouraged to recycle instead of just throwing things in the garbage.
The policies that come along with Green Business may be tough to follow, but can effectively bring about a change that will make the campus cleaner and healthier.
Gunn will also have the benefit of extra cash. With the $20,000 that is received for reducing one garbage bin, half of which goes to the school, Gunn can choose to use it on any of the school needs, from new textbooks to sports equipment for teams. If the new recycle bins are successful, Gunn may be able to get rid of several unnecessary garbage bins which could effectively bring in a lot of needed money to the school.
But along with all the benefits of Green Business comes the responsibility that the Gunn students must undertake. Students must give their best effort in order to help recycle and compost everything they can.
If Gunn can successfully follow the Green Business guidelines, Gunn can be used as an example for other schools to follow. If other Bay Area schools see how successful the Green Business program is, they might also try to become part of it.
