Gunn’s upcoming choir show, “Alice Down the Healthcare Hole: A Musical Coma,” marks the 12th collaboration between writer Nancy Gilsenan Hersage and Choir Director William Liberatore. The musical comedy is a remixed, satirical version of “Alice in Wonderland” which pokes fun at the American health care system.
Like last year’s choir show, this year’s choir show will feature many Gunn staff members, including Dave Deggeller, Todd Summers, Josh Bloom, Bakari Holmes, Jim Shelby, Katherine Moser, Tim Farrell and Paul Dunlap. Choir students will also be part of the show; at some points there will be as many as 220 people on the stage. “The entire choir has so many people and it will be really fun how it all comes together in the end,” junior Lauren Hart, who plays the lead role of Alice, said.
The choir classes learned about the show before winter break and have been working on it since vacation ended. “We’ve been practicing every day and in the week right before the choir show, we normally practice until 8 p.m.,” Hart said. According to Liberatore, the teachers practice after school in a two-week rehearsal before the show.
Liberatore assigned parts to volunteering teachers. Biology teacher Katherine Moser, who plays the Dodo Bird, said her love of theater is part of what drives her to perform. “When I was a kid, I was in choir, and now for two weeks every year I get to be a show girl,” Moser said. Moser also participates for the benefit of the choir. “[The show] is a fundraiser for the choir class and when teachers dress in goofy costumes, it sells tickets,” she said.
Secrecy about the details of the show remains important until the show officially opens. “I don’t know how much I can say at this point, but everyone should come to the show to find out,” Hart said.
What the public is allowed to know, however, is that the staff members involved star as various health care professionals such as pharmacy technicians, directors of the Admittance Department, surgeons and insurance agents. The musical comedy also features the Mad Hatter and March Hare singing “Test Time for Alice in Healthcare Land” to the tune of “Springtime for Hitler.”
The show runs Feb. 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. in Spangenberg Theater. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults and are available in the Student Activities Center or online at http://gunnchoir.org.
