Every Friday at lunch, members of the Hockey Club meet together in T-1 to discuss the San Jose Sharks. “This year a lot of students from every grade level joined the club,” junior Club President Rachael Fleischmann said. Fleischmann has been a Sharks fan ever since she could remember; her favorite player is ex-Sharks captain Scott Hannan. She started the club her sophomore year so all the school’s Sharks’ fans could meet together and talk about the team.
French teacher and club adviser, Marcel Losier, has been playing hockey since he was four years old and has a huge love for the sport. When Fleischmann approached him with the request to become the adviser for the club, he could not refuse. “Rachael Fleischmann, the San Jose Sharks’ number one fan, was a student in my French 3 class last year,” said Losier. “She asked me to be the club adviser and I thought it would be a fun idea to form the club.”
Fleischmann and Losier decide which games the club members will attend and how the meetings are run. So far, the team has attended two games, one each against the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Black hawks. Each meeting has a different focus.
During the meetings, members discuss different games and watch clips of footage from hockey games. Fleischmann was able to schedule a two-hour visit from Sharks radio broadcaster Randy Hahn during one of the meetings last semester. Both club members and regular students came to the meeting to watch as Hahn talked about his life and everything about the Sharks.
“He was very entertaining and answered all of our questions,” Losier said. “At the end of the meeting we took some pictures and he gave us hockey tickets, and some posters. He is a great ambassador for the Sharks and the game of hockey.”
The Hockey Club welcomes anyone who likes hockey or more specifically, the Sharks. “Anyone can come, but you better like the Sharks,” junior member Joseph Welch said.
