Newsbrief: Gunn, PAUSD get new technology
Published on October 22, 2007 in Volume 44, Issue 2

New technology is on its way to Gunn and the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD).

The PE Department recently received a copy of Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) from the state of California, which gave Gunn the game because the school qualified to participate in Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Governor's Challenge." The program rewards K-12 schools whose students are healthy and active.

Gunn does not have a PlayStation for the game. "My ultimate dream would be to have a DDR setup in a cardio/fitnes only room, separate from the weight room," PE Instructional Supervisor Steve Ames said.

At the advice of Superintendent Kevin Skelly, PAUSD recently purchased a new communications technology device, called Connect-ED. Operational by Jan. 2008, Connect-ED is a mass communication device capable of speaking 137 languages and contacting students and parents by phone and e-mail. Connect-ED allows school administrators to call tens of thousands of parents, students and staff members in minutes. "Connect-ED could be used to remind people about events such as Back to School night, in the event of an emergency or simply to send a message from the superintendent," Principal Noreen Likins said.
