This year, Student Executive Council Green Commissioner junior Sera Boerger and Student Activities Director Lisa Hall are working to improve the electronics recycling center in the Student Activities Center (SAC). Students may have seen recycling baskets in the SAC for CDs and batteries in the past, but the baskets were unappealing and unknown to many.
Gunn bought the kiosk from Green Citizen, a local electronics recycling company in Los Altos. The original cost of the kiosk was $800, but Green Citizen sold it to Gunn for $400.
"The kiosk is eye-catching and gives a lot of great information about recycling and where you can do it," Hall said. "Plus, it allows us to easily recycle items we have been been able to recycle before, like batteries and plastic grocery bags." Students can recycle ink cartridges, cell phones, plastic and biodegradable bags, CDs and DVDs at the new kiosk. Although students can drop off only small items in the SAC, large electronics like televisions and computers can be recycled at Palo Alto Hardware or at Green Citizen's facility on El Camino Real. Green Citizen will come to collect all smaller electronics from the SAC every month to properly recycle the items.
To encourage students to use the kiosk and recycle, Boerger will speak with Publicity Commissioners senior Miranda Der and junior Jara Montez. "It is very important to get the word out to people and let them know that we have a really cool recycling center," Boerger said. "This way, more people will use it and learn about why it is so important to recycle.
