While the volleyball swept San Jose's Lincoln Lions last Tuesday, the victory came as no surprise. The team currently has a 14-1 preseason record and recently won the Central California Classic, a major Bay Area tournament.
The Titans started slowly in game one, with Lincoln matching every early point. However, after senior Tiffany Stone spiked the ball powerfully into Lincoln's court to take an 8-4 lead, Lincoln began to falter. The Lions made consistent bumping errors, allowing Gunn to pull ahead. Senior Michaela Venuti, who won Most Valuable Player at the Central California Classic, made sets with machine-like precision to help the Titans steamroll through the Lions set after set. While Gunn faltered several times on serves, they still sailed to a 25-16 victory. In game two, the Lions settled themselves and made fewer mistakes. They started competitively scoring seven points to trail the Titans by just one. The Lions blocked sophomore Chanel Miller's spikes at the net twice early in the game, but once again, the team's nearly flawless tandem of perfect sets and powerful kills carried a 25-13 win. By the third game, the Lions' game lacked luster. Junior Karen Scrivner closed the match with three straight aces to win by a landslide score of 25-6 and 3-0 in the match. "Games one and two didn't go as well as I had hoped, but in the third we pulled it out," coach Raudel Perez said. While the Titans expected a victory coming in against the Lions, they were also aware that it was still just a preseason game and that there was tougher competition to come. "League will most definitely be harder than before, we'll face some of our toughest teams yet," Perez said.
