Newsbrief: Student nominated to Obama delegation

Senior Molly Kawahata was nominated to become a delegate to represent Congressional District 14 at the National Democratic Convention in Denver, where she will cast a vote for Obama.

Kawahata, who is the California High School State Director and National High School Director for Obama’s campaign, was selected along with two other delegates out of 40 candidates to attend the convention by Democratic or independent voters.

Kawahata was surprised by her win. “It was pretty exciting to find out that I will be a representative for a political cause.” she said. “I never anticipated that.”

In hopes of increasing her support, Kawahata campaigned by creating a Facebook group and e-mailing teachers. “I used all my networking and sent out e-mails,” she said.

Kawahata said she first became interested in being a part of the National Democratic Convention when a co-worker urged her to become a delegate. “I got encouragement from somebody in the Obama campaign to run,” Kawahata said. “What I was doing with the campaign was consistent with the delegation.”

Kawahata said that she also ran in hopes of more youth representation at the convention. “I think that students have played a huge role in the presidential campaign this year,” she said.
