Q&A: featuring Jeffrey Wang, Student Body President 08-09
Published on June 2, 2008 in Volume 44, Issue 8

The Oracle: What are some of your main goals as Student Body President?

Jeffrey Wang: I want to have stronger interactions between the student body and the administration. We can do this by having Student Executive Council (SEC) members attend more administration meetings to have a stronger influence in school-wide matters. I also want to keep students informed with what’s happening and get their input through InClass, the Facebook group and the announcements, and I will also try to personally walk around and talk to the students to keep them informed. I also want to better publicize the open SEC meetings to give students greater opportunities to learn more and voice their opinions about Homecoming and other events and issues.

TO: What is something that you want to fix for next year?

JW: This may not seem like a very large or serious issue to many, but the bathrooms are definitely an issue at Gunn, and to improve Gunn, we need to start with small steps. The custodians do their best to keep them clean, but not enough students care enough to keep them in good condition. Because of this, hygiene and odor are a problem. I want to spread awareness and encourage people to just clean up after themselves. It’s really important that the bathrooms stay clean, and I’m willing to go in there and clean them myself if that’s what it takes.

TO: Is there anything that you want the student body to know about you?

JW: I believe that anything is possible with hard work. I know that Max [Keeler] and the entire SEC this year have definitely left Gunn with high standards and tough shoes to fill by adding more events and boosting student participation, but I am confident that with hard work, dedication and a positive attitude, we can continue to make Gunn an even better environment.

TO: What are you most looking forward to for next year?

JW: I’m very excited that I have a great team working with me on SEC. Homecoming is always very fun and is my favorite time of the year, and I’m sure we will come up with a great theme and even more fun.

TO: What made you want to run for Student Body President?

JW: Throughout my years at Gunn, I have noticed things that could use improvement, and how they could improve. A lot of my friends encouraged me to run because they knew that I had the right attitude and persistence to make Gunn a better place.

TO: How do you think the student body reacted towards your victory?

JW: I’ve heard a lot of discontent with my victory in the election. I just hope that people who are doubting me will give me a chance. Ali [Maggioncalda] was a great candidate, but I promise to try my hardest and do my best to improve Gunn.

TO: Well, thanks for your time! Anything else?

JW: I’m really looking forward to next year and I hope you are too. I hope that everyone will have a great year and get involved in more student activities. But as for now, I just hope everyone has an amazing summer!
