Yoga
For those who dislike fast-paced exercise, yoga offers a simple, low-impact workout that refreshes both body and mind. Yogis (people who practice yoga) find that the benefits of yoga stretch beyond relaxation and peace of mind. The combination of breathing exercises, poses and meditation are said to lower blood pressure, eliminate stress and increase flexibility. Yoga is gaining popularity with students of all ages, especially for its stress-reducing properties. We recommend trying Darshana located on High Street or Yoga Source on Hamilton Avenue, both in downtown Palo Alto. Also, both the Palo Alto Family (located on Ross Road) and Page Mill YMCAs offer free yoga classes for all members.
The DishThe Dish is a paved trail providing a challenging 3.5-mile hike or run free of charge. The path slopes above the city and has striking views of the San Francisco Bay. The inclines are steep but rewarding, and running through the wilderness supplies one with a sensation of solitude in the world and a step away from everyday life. There are two options to start the hike: one beginning with an incredibly steep rise and one beginning with a depression. It is located on Foothill Expressway/Junipero Serra Road and Stanford Avenue, and is open until 8 p.m.
Studio KicksStudio Kicks is one of the most exciting exercise locations in Palo Alto. The drop-in rate is $15 and classes are generally packed full of athletes. The music is always upbeat and fast-paced. The class is led by the ex-Power Ranger coach who is bursting with enthusiasm to keep you moving. This is helpful as kickboxing requires a tremendous amount of energy, with non-stop jumping, kicking and punching exercises. Though it is quite tiring, endorphins produced by the exercise quickly replenish lost energy and boost confidence with the accomplishment of a 45-minute session. The first session is difficult, but as muscles build up, sessions will become easier and more enjoyable.
Sky HighFor those who love working out while having fun, Sky High Sports offers just that. Located in Santa Clara, Sky High is a trampoline complex for all ages. It is divided into three sections: two for freestyle jumping and one for dodgeball. The freestyle section is comprised of dozens of smaller trampolines. Although trampolines seem juvenile, the complex is popular with all ages, including professionals in search of corporate party venues. Sky High incorporates exercise and fun in such a way that visitors do not even realize they are getting a workout. Safety is ensured with 4-inch padded framework and covered walls around the jumping areas.
