Summer Plans Centerfold: Camp counseling in Canada
Published on June 6, 2007 in Volume 43, Issue 8

Taking care of screaming kids for a whole summer might sound like a nightmare to some, but junior Jacqui Black is unfazed and even excited about her summer job as a camp counselor. Black will be working as a kayaking and canoeing specialist at Camp New Moon, where she will teach small groups of campers basic knowledge about boats.

Located in Ontario, Canada, Camp New Moon is a small summer program for kids aged 8 to 12. It boasts an extensive aquatics program with water sports including swimming, windsurfing and waterskiing. "I've been going to this camp for seven years now, so it's really exciting that I get to work there," Black said. "It's a really close group of people and everybody knows everybody."

Even though Black moved from Canada to the Bay Area seven years ago, she has attended Camp New Moon every summer. "I'm really excited to be with my Canadian friends," Black said. "It's like a whole different environment that I get to go back to every summer." Although she will be one of the counselors heading a group of girls this summer, she remembers being a camper herself. "I've done so many things here and [different] levels like pre-Counselor-in-Training (CIT) and CIT before I got to become a counselor," Black said.

Although she is excited about going back to camp, Black is also anxious about her new and important role. "I'm nervous about the transition from a camper to a counselor," she said. "I am responsible for these kids, and I can't daze off anymore."
