The Oracle: What is the most important part of your job as Sports Commissioner?
Rachael Fleischmann: It’s my job to help build the Gunn sports community, as well as make sure all of our sports teams get the proper recognition. A lot of sports don’t get the attention that basketball and football do, and it’s important we have pride for our school and all of its athletes.
TO: What is your #1 priority this year?
RF: I’m planning to have at least one raffle to raise money for each varsity sport. The funds raised would go directly back to the teams and coaches. The raffle prizes are going to be great–anything from Warriors tickets to restaurant gift certificates.
TO: Anything else on the horizon for Gunn sports?
RF: I want to improve the Sixth-man club to be more than just owning a t-shirt. We’re going to be raising a lot more money for food and apparel.
TO: What do you think of the new athletic facilities?
RF: I suspect less games will be rained out, and there is definitely a psychological advantage to having some of the best fields in the Bay Area. Pretty much every team on the new fields can expect more fans at their games.
TO: Any chance of intramural sports this year?
RF: We’ve been working on a way to have them during school, but it’s difficult when we only have 40 minutes work with. Hopefully we can get an informal league started sometime this year.
