Q&A: featuring Titan Broadcast Network Sports Broadcasters Ryan Griffiths and Steven Sagat
Published on October 20, 2008 in Volume 45, Issue 2

The Oracle: When was the first sports section on the announcements?

Ryan Griffiths: At the beginning of last year. It started out as an idea.

Steven Sagat: It didn’t go too well though, because we were thinking we had to be extremely detailed all the time, so we always took stuff online from track and field and talked about each person’s times and records.

TO: Where did the idea for the section come from?

SS: In my freshman year in video production, [video production teacher] Mr. Corpuz came up to me and wanted me to put my strong suit into the announcements, so he wanted me to be in sports. The next year, I ran it through with Ryan, and he liked it, so we started.

TO: What do students gain from this section in the announcements?

SS: I think they get kind of bored of the everyday announcements. We’ve been told that we’re funny, and we like to put humor in our stuff.

RG: I figured if we just reported sports and stuff, people wouldn’t be as interested, because this is not a sports-oriented school.

TO: Do you usually write a script beforehand, or do you improvise?

RG: I usually write the scripts on Thursday night.

SS: Yeah, when I write the script, it just does not turn out well.

RG: On air though, we do a lot of improvisation, so the script is more of a guideline to follow. Last year, we started getting by with just bullet points of what we had to cover, and we would improvise the rest.

TO: Are you thinking of being a sports broadcaster in the future?

SS: I am. I want to study broadcasting as a major in college, and Mr. Corpuz is really the reason why. He put me in front of the camera, and let me do a lot, and I liked it.

TO: Who will take over when you graduate?

RG: It’s going to be a tough selection process. Stephen graduates a year before me, so we’ll have to find a replacement for him first. I’m going to hold tryouts and auditions, and Stephen and I will judge. No average Joe can do this.
