Biggest Mock S.A.T

Event of the year!

The next Mock S.A.T. will be available to both Gunn and Paly students! Click Here

The Academic Center is now signing up students for the Saturday, January 16th Mock S.A.T. to be held at Gunn High School and proctored by Kaplan.  Students who take the Mock S.A.T. as part of their preparation for the S.A.T. provide themselves with the opportunity to increase their future S.A.T. score.  The Mock S.A.T. gives students the chance to take the test under S.A.T. conditions while building confidence and endurance in test-taking abilities.

Parents and students are invited to attend Kaplan’s test results seminar on Wednesday, January 20th in the AC at 7:00 P.M. in order to learn more about what their test scores mean.  Kaplan will also provide students and parents with more information on how the SAT and ACT play a role in college admissions.  Kaplan will also go over some great test taking strategies to help students succeed on test day.

Space is limited.  The cost for this exam will be $15 if you sign up before December 15.  The cost will increase to $20 for all sign-ups received after December 15.

The Academic Center is Now Open For All Students

The A.C. is primarily a drop-in facility where students are welcomed during their prep period, brunch, free period, lunch or after-school.  Feel free to come in and type/print assignments, surf the web, finish last minute homework, cram for quizzes and tests, or just relax in-between your classes with friends (just be sure to keep your voices down, the library is next door.)

We have an entire lab of Mac computers, a few Macs/PCs solely for the A.C., printers, textbooks and various supplies and reference materials for use in the Academic Center.

While students may work together in the A.C., each student is responsible for adhering to Gunn’s Academic Honesty/Integrity policies regarding cheating (including copying homework) and plagiarism.

The Center Mission

The Gunn High School Academic Center is an inclusive and free support center for all students and has a respect for students’ diverse learning styles and cultural/academic backgrounds.

To improve academic performance, the A.C. is both a place and an opportunity for students to receive tutoring, work individually on homework/test studying, and in small groups to collaborate on projects.

The A.C. recruits student tutors and excellent adult community volunteers who have demonstrated competence in various subjects to provide quality tutoring to students requesting support in their academics.

In Memory of
Albert Hopkins Jr.
“He gave, he listened, he encouraged”

On June 30, 2007, Academic Center Coordinator Albert Hopkins Jr. passed away.  After nearly a year of mourning, Gunn High School honored his memory by declaring April 4th “Albert Hopkins Memorial Day,” and a beautiful bench on campus commemorates his dedication to Gunn students.

Congratulations

Former Academic Center Coordinator Chris Bell is now a Gunn High School mathematics teacher, teaching Geometry and Algebra/Trig Honors.  The 2009-2010 academic school year will be his first year as a Gunn teacher.  If you see him on campus, be sure to say, “Hello” and congratulate him on joining Gunn’s fine teaching faculty.
