Setting up Netscape Messenger to read e-mail

Technology Short Course
Lettie Weinmann, Technology Mentor

Reading you e-mail should be quick and simple. Right now, using Netscape as the e-mail reader is the best solution for teachers on the Gunn campus. The problem is, each teacher must have his/her own profile set up on the computer that is most frequently used to check e-mail.

Here are two ways to set up Netscape as your mail reading program. If you do not already have a netscape profile, use the instructions on the left, if you do have a profile and just need to edit it, use the instructions on the right.

Setting Up a NEW Netscape Profile Editing your OLD Netscape Profile

Make Sure Netscape is closed. Open your hard drive, open the applications folder, open the Netscape Communicator folder.

  1. Open the "User Profile Manager" (near the bottom of the list)
  2. A list of users will appear. Go ahead and delete someone that you know is not returning. Click "NEW"
  3. Go through the menus and fill in the info as follows:

• First screen: Next

•Second screen: your name (first and last), your e-mail address

•Third screen: First name

•Fourth Screen: next

•Fifth Screen: your outgoing mail server is: mail.charlotte.pausd.org

•Sixth screen: your user name (login) for e-mail

•Your incoming mail server is: mail.charlotte.pausd.org. (If you are at home it is mail-ext.charlotte.pausd.org)

•Click the IMAP button

Seventh screen: (news sever) click next

Eighth Screen: No shortcuts

Ninth Screen: uncheck importing info box

Last screen: Done will save your profile and launch Netscape.

  1. In the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Go to Identity - Check to see that this is you. If it is not, we did something wrong earlier and go back to step one!
  3. Go to Mail Servers. Click on your mail server in the Incoming mail server window, top right. Now click Edit. Check to make sure your server name is mail.charlotte.pausd.org, Click on this. Choose edit, then for server type pull down IMAP, This insures that your mail stays on the server rather than being sent to your computer.
  4. Before leaving this window, click the IMAP tab. Click "Remove it immediately", then click the bottom two boxes, "Clean Up Inbox" and "Empty Trash on Quit"

.

  1. While you are in preferences, go to navigator and change your homepage to the Gunn homepage.

O.K. Now you are done.

.

1. Double Click to open Netscape. You should get a list of profiles to choose from. Choose your name. If you are the only one who uses this computer, you may not get this list. (**Important, you must make sure you are opening your own profile. Otherwise, the changes you make could change someone elses profile!)

2. Under the Edit menu choose Preferences.

3. When this window opens, click "Mail Servers".

4. Incoming mail server should be: mail.charlotte.pausd.org. If it is, you can skip to step 10. If it is not, you must delete what is there (no, simply editing won't work) by clicking the delete button at right.

5. Now click the Add button. Enter: mail.charlotte.pausd.org. as the server name. (If you are at home, enter mail-ext.charlotte.pausd.org.)

6. Use the arrows to pull down IMAP as the server type.

7. Make sure your username is correct.

8. Click the IMAP Tab.

9. Click the bottom three boxes. (This deals with deleteing mail) click OK

10. Before you leave the Mail Servers window, check to make sure that your outgoing mail server is the same as your incoming mail server and your username is O.K.
