Counseling Update - January 19, 2015


Dear Gunn Community,
Here is this week's update from the Gunn Counseling Department.
Late Start Tomorrow, January 20-School Starts at 9:35 AM (All Grades)
Because we have an extra E period this week, we are going to to be using E period tomorrow, January 20, for teacher collaboration and all classes will begin at 9:35 AM.
There will be no Zero period classes tomorrow. All Zero period classes will be Wednesday-Friday this week.

Titan 101 Groups 1-7 on Thursday (9th Grade)
Beginning this Thursday, January 22, the Gunn counselors will have their second Titan 101 session with their freshmen. The counselors will check in with how the students are doing, go over four year planning and talk about upcoming course registration information.
This week, groups 1-7 will meet in their regular Titan 101 room. Groups 8-14 will be January 29 and groups 15-21 will meet on February 5.
Freshmen One on One Meetings (9th Grade)
In addition to the upcoming Titan 101 sessions, the counselors are finishing up their 1 on 1 sessions with their freshmen. This meeting is a great opportunity for the counselor and the student to get to know each other in a one on one setting.
Jostens-Important Information for Graduation (12th Grade)
Seniors, remember to order your cap and gown and graduation announcements online at You can also mail your order to the Jostens office. Forms are available in the student activities office.
Everyone that wants to participate in the June graduation must have a cap and gown.
Please order online or mail in your order before the January 30 deadline.

I also ask that if you feel your child or another child is in severe danger of causing harm to themselves, please call 911 immediately.
ACS Counseling Available on Saturday (All Grades)
Adolescent Counseling Services now has the ability to see students on Saturdays.
There are now clinicians ready and available to do assessments at their outpatient clinic at 1717 Embarcadero Road Suite 4000 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Parents and students need to contact Connie Mayer, the program director, at (925) 640-2422 to schedule an appointment.
Services will be offered for free for Gunn students at this time of crisis intervention.
Please note that this is not a drop in clinic and that an appointment is needed before a student can be seen.
College and Career Center News
Family Connection Information (All Grades)
Here's some great information on our school website about Family Connection through our Naviance software. Family Connection allows you to learn more about the college application process.

Practice on Oral Interviews-Each Tuesday (11th-12th Grades)
The Gunn College and Career Center is offering Tuesday workshops for students on oral interviews. The workshop is designed to help students work on oral interview for the college application process, job interviews and to improve their overall communication skills. Out of State Public College Presentation February 5 at Paly (10th and 11th Grades)
For those who are interested in learning more about out of state public colleges, save the date of February 5 at 7:00 PM on your calendar for an informative event that will be held at the Palo Alto High School Library.
Held jointly by our two college and career centers, this event will have numerous schools talking about the opportunities available out of state for our students.

Gap Fair Los Altos High School January 24-1:00 PM (11th and 12th Grades)
This Saturday, January 24, Los Altos High School will be hosting a Gap Fair.
The event starts at 1:00 PM and will have speakers talk about the opportunities and benefits for students taking a gap year after they graduate from high school and before they enter college.
Summer Opportunities January 28-7:00 PM Gunn Library (10th, 11th and 12th Grades)
Do you want to learn about summer opportunities for your Gunn student? College and Career Counselor, Linda Kirsch, will lead her annual "Summer Opportunity Fair" on January 28 at 7:00 PM in the Gunn Library.
During the event, there will be representatives talking about different opportunities for your student to do this summer.

Scholarship Information for Colleges (12th Grade)
With college fast approaching, many students will be interested in learning about scholarship opportunities. To learn more about what scholarships are available, come to College and Career Center and see Mr. Leighton Lang.
