Counseling Update - November 17, 2014

Dear Gunn Community,
Here is this week's update from the Gunn Counseling Department.
Progress Reports (All Grades)
This past Friday marked the midway point of the second quarter. All students who are earning a C- or lower will receive a progress report from their teacher. The official notice of progress reports will be available online Wednesday (November 19) and will be mailed home shortly thereafter.
Minimum Days Next Monday and Tuesday, November 24 and 25 (All Grades)
As mentioned in the Infinite Campus message this past Friday, we will have a change to our schedule on Monday and Tuesday of next week, November 24 and 25, as we will have activities for our staff in the afternoon and all students will be done with academic classes no later than 12:52 PM each day.
Students will attend each class one day next week with zero period starting at 8:25 AM on Monday with A, B and C periods to follow. On Tuesday, the school day will start 8:25 AM with D, E, F and G periods.
Support (All Grades)
I personally want to thank everyone for all the support you have given our staff the past two weeks. It has been greatly appreciated by everyone.
The loss of youth to suicide is an issue that is larger than just a school or even a community but as a community we can come together to work together to take care of our youth and take care of each other.
Our community has responded with the city setting up track watch and our district in providing additional counseling support at Gunn to help our students and staff on an ongoing basis. Our teachers have also made accommodations for students to enable them to have the time needed in regards to their academic work.
To help support you in a time of crisis, here are some important phone numbers to contact.

  • Santa Clara County Hotline (855) 278-4204
  • California Youth Crisis Hotline (800) 843-5200
  • Suicide Hotline (800) 273-TALK

If you have concerns your child may have severe social emotional health needs, please email me at
I also ask that if you feel your child or another child is in severe danger of causing harm to themselves, please call 911 immediately.
Support PiE Double Donation Days Through Friday (All Grades)
Thanks to all of you who have supported Partners in Education (PiE). The donations to PiE have helped many programs at Gunn including our Counseling Program. Your donations have made a difference for all Gunn students.
This week, there is a special opportunity to make your donation dollars go farther as each dollar that is raised through Friday, November 21, will be matched up to $225,000.
CAHSEE Testing Postponed (11th and 12th Grades)
As part of our support for students during this difficult time, the Gunn Administrative team decided to cancel the administration of the CAHSEE exam scheduled for November 4 and November 5 for those students who needed to take the test.
We know that some students who need to take the test want to take the CAHSEE exam as early as possible this year in order to obtain the results before the final administration in May 2015. To accommodate this need, our team has substituted February 3 and February 4 for our next administration dates. Taking the CAHSEE exam in February will allow students to receive their results prior to the May administration.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tara Keith at
Freshmen 1:1 Meetings (9th Grade)
This week, the Gunn Counselors are beginning their one on one meeting with their freshmen. During the meeting, the counselors will talk about the high school transition, their currents courses and their interests in and out of schools.
The counselors will also start their four year plan with the freshmen which will be followed up in the Titan 101 counselor session in January.
Sophomores and Naviance (10th Grade)
This week, Leighton Lang will be visiting sophomore classes to introduce our Naviance program to the students.
Naviance is a powerful software tool that allows students to explore college and career options and will be a valuable resource for them to use in the years to come.
College Visits  (11th and 12th Grades)
We are in full swing having colleges visit. Please check your Naviance account. There are some great colleges coming and many have unique academic packages that are great for Gunn students.
To be able to attend one of the sessions, students will need to sign up at least 24 hours in advance through Naviance and prearrange with teachers to miss class.
Special Announcement for Students Applying to Georgetown or MIT (12th Grade)
All seniors who are applying to Georgetown University or MIT, must complete the paper copy of the Secondary School Report and Midyear Report forms. Gunn counselors will not be submitting these forms electronically.
Your Counselor or Registrar can supply you with a paper copy of the forms so you can complete your portion before you include them in your college packet.
